Mahler 8 Partnership Offer
Mahler 8 is an exceptional and ambitious project to perform the Eighth Symphony by one of Austria's greatest composers, Gustav Mahler. This work is unique not only for its artistic quality but also for the extraordinary demands of its performance. At its 1910 premiere, it was performed by 1,005 artists — 850 choir members, 146 orchestra musicians, 8 soloists, and the conductor. This is why Mahler's Eighth Symphony is famously known as the "Symphony of a Thousand."
The project is led by Moravskoslezská Sinfonietta, z.s., an orchestral academy for pupils of primary schools, students of conservatories, and universities. Its mission is to educate young musicians from all over the Czech Republic in orchestral performance. Since its founding, Moravskoslezská Sinfonietta has supported more than 1,000 young musicians.
On 17 and 18 May 2026, Moravskoslezská Sinfonietta will join forces with the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava and the Symphonic Wind Orchestra Májovák to present Mahler's Symphony No. 8. The concerts will take place precisely on the 115th anniversary of Gustav Mahler's death and will also serve as a tribute to this great composer.
Around 600 performers will take part in these concerts — a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience that will not be easily repeated. The first concert will be preceded by a general rehearsal open free of charge to senior citizens and pupils and students of art schools — a gesture made possible by the contributions of our project partners, ensuring a significant social impact alongside the artistic one.
The concerts will take place in Trojhalí Karolina in Ostrava — a venue chosen deliberately for its strong resemblance (both in construction and period of origin) to Munich's Neue Musikfesthalle, where Mahler's Eighth was premiered. This will allow audiences to be transported in atmosphere to the year 1910, recreating the sense of that historic moment 116 years later.
Partnering with the Mahler 8 project connects your company with respected and prestigious institutions on a unique project of European significance.
